Day 11: Your family pet(s) – if you don’t have one, take a picture of anything
Tuesday, October 12, 2010(A day late.. -__-) since I don't have a family pet, I'll tell you about my day on October 11th, which was yesterday.
Early Monday morning, at 4am, I woke up to get ready for a field trip that my class was having. If I attend, I wouldn't have to do a 5 page research paper and I would use this field trip to write my cultural event paper. I left around 4:45am and headed out to San Francisco with my boyfriend to attend the sunrise ceremony on Alcatraz Island. Monday was also Columbus day, or Indigenous people day. My teacher had us watch a documentary on the occupation of alcatraz by the Indians, the natives. The film was called "Alcatraz is not an Island." and it's basically how the Indians were kicked out of alcatraz by the white man so that they can make something off of that island. So the Indians rebelled and tried to occupy the island and make it into an indian cultural center. However, the government intervened and kicked them out of that island again and gave them back other parts of their land elsewhere.
This sunrise ceremony we attended was to keep the indian tradition alive and to remember the people who use to occupy this island and fought for their rights. It was a really nice experience, and my boyfriend enjoyed it as well. I was surprised he woke up that early with me. took him a while to get up tho.. but I'm just glad he was there with me.
We got to San Francisco Around 5:05am, and took the Ferry to Alcatraz Island around 5:45am.
We reached the island
You can still see the markings that the Indians back in the day when they wanted to occupy the island
